This survey, commissioned by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, aims adds to the evidence base on the factors that affect the performance and growth of small businesses (those with 10 -49 employees). This study is based on earlier research carried out for BIS on the growth of micro-businesses (0-9 employees) and replicates much of the approach used in that study. This report identifies and evaluates the obstacles affecting growth in small businesses. The research sought to capture business owners’ own perceptions of which obstacles constrain their businesses.

The survey report is written by the University of Durham Business School. BMG conducted the quantitative CATI fieldwork in October/November 2014, and the recruitment for the qualitative depth interviews.
