Ahead of the penultimate weekend in the Barclays Premier League, BMG releases the public’s relegation predictions.

In BMG’s latest polling, we asked a nationally representative sample of UK adults which two teams they think will be relegated from the Premier League alongside Aston Villa, with about 5 games to go. Of those who are interested in football, almost half think Newcastle will go down (47%) followed by Norwich (42%) and Sunderland (29%). Smaller proportions think Swansea will go down (7%) followed by Crystal Palace (6%) and West Brom (5%) (25% don’t know).

A closer look at the data reveals an age divide with six in ten of those aged 45-54 thinking Newcastle will be relegated  (60%) compared with just a third of 18 to 24 year olds (33%).

With Swansea and West Brom having reached the considered safe 40 point mark, all eyes will be on Newcastle, Sunderland, Norwich and Crystal Palace this weekend.

According to the Premier League, in only one scenario will the fight to stay up not run until the final round of matches on Sunday 15 May. That is if Newcastle beat Aston Villa and both Sunderland and Norwich lose their weekend and midweek matches.

Data tables containing a full breakdown of the results can be found here.
