A BMG Research exclusive poll for The i has found that two-thirds of Britons are worried about being able to afford food and other essentials.

More than half of people also said they have become worse off in the past 12 months, with a similar proportion expecting their finances to get worse in the coming 12 months.

Almost 8 in 10 of those surveyed said the cost of living was one of the most important issues facing society today, while over half said it was the most important facing society today.

Elsewhere, the poll found the following on Boris Johnson and Keir Starmer’s leadership of their respective parties:

  • 45% of all Brits said Boris Johnson being leader makes the Conservative Party less appealing, with 17% saying it makes the Conservative Party more appealing.
  • Of those who say they will not vote Labour at the next election, 25% cite Keir Starmer’s leadership as the reason.
  • 44% of Brits said today’s politicians are less trustworthy than those who have served in parliament in the past.
