BMG Research was commissioned in September 2016 to manage the London Borough of Islington Council’s Staff Engagement research over a period of four years through two surveys.The key objectives of the research are to:

- Kick-start a new programme of engagement with the workforce and to inform the development of the People Strategy
- Use the feedback to understand and improve the workplace for staff
- Form the basis for action plans to increase engagement amongst staff, both at a corporate and departmental level
- Provide a real ‘temperature check’ which focuses both on where the council needs to make improvements and their areas of strength
The first stage of the research will involve a series of focus groups to engage and involve staff in the process early on and to help develop the questionnaire. Groups will also be held with senior leaders and Trade Union representatives. The first survey will then take place in 2016/17 and will be delivered via a mixed methods approach consisting of an online survey sent directly to the work email account of staff and the remainder receiving a paper version using innovative methods to engage the harder to reach groups.
Following completion of the first wave of research, BMG will also manage a second staff engagement survey in 2018/19 to help continue to drive the dialogue between staff and senior management.
